Why can silver jump?

Click each level. You are not expected to know this yet—this is the semester roadmap.

Level 1 (Money): rates, dollar, and “price of money”

Simple idea: When the “price of money” changes, many assets reprice.

rates Lower expected rates can support metals (non-yielding assets look better).
USD A weaker dollar can lift USD-priced commodities.
risk Higher uncertainty can push demand toward “store-of-value” assets.

Level 2 (Industry): silver is a material, not just “shiny”

Simple idea: Industrial demand can be a powerful price driver.

solar Used in solar PV components.
electronics Used in electronics and power applications.
supply Supply cannot always scale instantly → tightness can appear.

Level 3 (Futures): leverage, CME margin, and margin calls

Simple idea: Leverage amplifies moves. Margin rules can create forced trades.

futures Control big notional with a smaller margin deposit.
CME Exchange sets margin rules to reduce default risk in volatile markets.
margin call If price moves against you, you may be forced to add cash or cut positions.
forced flows Forced buying/selling can push prices further in the short run.

Level 4 (Geopolitics): shocks, policy, and uncertainty

Simple idea: Shocks change risk, trade, and inventory locations—prices react.

risk premium Uncertainty can raise the risk premium embedded in prices.
trade Trade policy/tariffs/logistics can create regional tightness.
inventory “Metal in the wrong place” can exaggerate short-term moves.

Bonus (1 minute): paper vs physical

Simple idea: Paper trades fast; physical moves slow.

paper Futures/options/ETFs trade quickly and can be leveraged.
physical Bars/coins/vault transfers take time and capacity.
result Speed + leverage can mean bigger volatility.
